PHENO 2004 SYMPOSIUM:
RESTAURANTS

Note: Not updated since last year, but a slightly more updated version will be included in your registration folder.

Since you are on your own for lunch and dinner (except for the conference dinner), we've compiled a list of restaurants within walking distance of the Pyle Center and conference hotels. Restaurants are listed in order from nearest to farthest away. Click here for Restaurant Map. Disclaimer: This list is not comprehensive and reflects the personal preferences of current Phenolanders! Check out The Isthmus online for its Dining Guide for more info about the Madison dining scene.

# RESTAURANT ADDRESS DESCRIPTION
*
Brats on the Terrace
The Union Terrace
Local speciality. Top location by the lake. (Good beer is inside.)
1
Food Carts
Library Mall
Located across the street from the Pyle Center behind the library, at the bottom of State St. When the weather is good, order from the carts and enjoy the stimulating atmosphere on Library Mall or take your food across the street to the Memorial Union terrace and eat by the lake.

Buraka: East African food. Best food cart according to Jaime and Toby.
Guantanamera: Cuban style. Very good saffron rice. Cuban music to dance to while you wait for your food.
Jamerica: Tasty jerk chicken, great jerk pork.
Thai House: Very good. Mild spices. Excellent squash curry.
Sukho Thai: Try a "two-star" dish (hot!) - you won't fall asleep in the afternoon talks.
Loose Juice: Very good juices and smoothies. The owner is notorious in the Physics Dept. for a Vietnam War era incident.
Turtle: Great quesadillas, generous portions; fresh veggies and some organics used.
Athenian Garden: Impossibly slow.
Zen Suchi: New cart with good inexpensive sushi.
2
Espresso Royale Caffe
650 State St.
Good cappuccinos, steamers, cookies and bars.
3
Sunroom Cafe
638 State St.
Nice lunch selections. Excellent soups, salads, desserts. Often crowded. Halzen's favorite lunch spot.
4
Mediterranean Cafe
625 State St.
North African & Turkish specials; good, cheap, and fast! Often crowded at lunchtime.
5
The Saz
558 State St.
Odd combinations of Middle Eastern and Mexican food. If you keep an open mind, it might be good. Dieter's favorite.
5
Buraka
543 State St.
Same food as the cart, but warmer location recommended early in the year.
6
Qdoba Mexican Grill
548 State St.
Hearty portions of good "Mexican" food. Graham's favorite lunch spot.
7
Husnu's
547 State St.
Interesting combination of Turkish/Italian cuisine.
8
Kabul
541 State St.
Afghani and Mediterranean cuisine. Try the duck or veggie strudel. Delicious!
10
Temple Gardens
411 W. Gilman
Taiwanese-style noodles 'n broth, with tasty meats and veggies. Try the eggplant - Heather's favorite.
11
Amy's Cafe
414 W. Gilman
A very good Greek salad; sandwiches, burgers, beer. Tables on sidewalk.
12
Wasabi Japanese Rest.
499 State St.
Reasonably good, fairly authentic. Full sushi bar.
13
La Bamba
449 State St.
Cheap Mexican food, awful--Olsson-style. [Olsson, however, says the only imperfection is no beer served.] Burritos "as big as your head." Open very late.
14
Casa de Lara
341 State St.
Very good authentic Mexican cuisine.
15
Chautara
334 State St.
Good Nepali food. Speakers often taken there.
16
Himal Chuli
318 State St.
Himalayan food, including good veggie dishes.
17
Parthenon Gyros
316 State St.
Better gyros than most. "Want fries with that?"
18
Tutto Pasta Trattoria
305 State St.
Popular, though some dishes stingy on sauce.
19
Angelic Brewing Co.
322 W. Johnson
Local brew pub. Better food than the Great Dane pub, but beer comes in second place. Tilman likes the hot chicken wings.
20
Cafe Montmartre
127 E. Mifflin
Pizza with a nice wine bar. Postdoc favorite. NOTE: OPENS AT 3:00 P.M.!
21
Harvest
21 N. Pinckney
Covers the whole range from overpriced to great.
22
L'Etoile
25 N. Pinckney
Best restaurant in Madison. Expensive, but worth it. F. Halzen's favorite dinner spot. (Not open for lunch.)
23
Tornado Club Steak House
116 S. Hamilton
Like a museum. Steak-house before politically correct food. Very good.
24
Kennedy Manor Dining Room
1 Langdon St. Fl. 1
Nice bar, relatively inexpensive and good food. Under new ownership.
25
Ocean Grill
117 Martin Luther
King Jr. Blvd
Fine dining near Monona Terrace with seafood emphasis.
26
Magnus
120 E. Wilson St.
Upscale restaurant with entertainment. Very good food, but it's not Brazilian.
27
Great Dane Pub
123 E. Doty
Local brew pub with a great menu, billiards & cigar room. Nationally renowned.
